No family is an island!
This pandemic taught us what’s important for our kids and for the rest of us!
In person--real life-- face to face connections.
Covid 19 made us all ache for a HUG!
(And made us so sick of zoom!)
I’m a mom, a therapist and a long term Studio City resident and last year right before Covid 19 struck, I started a nonprofit organization called AfterSchool Village, to help us all raise our kids together … and to do it while saving the Earth!
As a mom, being part of my kids’ preschool community I learned firsthand that it takes a village to raise our young people and if there were any times when this is more relevant than ever it's NOW. If our need to connect is fulfilled, we can be happy, creative, and positive.
As a therapist, research and experience have taught me that the solution to the skyrocketing levels of anxiety and depression among kids is not the therapy room--it’s the world! After years in private practice, I understood that kids need to belong to a community who cares about them. Kids need to be heard and seen and be relevant to more people than just their nuclear families. Kids need to belong to a village.
If community is one of the axes Afterschool Village is built upon, sustainable living is another.
Our children are anxious and concerned about climate change and why wouldn’t they be -- it hangs a menacing shadow over their futures. But where there is a challenge there is also an opportunity! By being ambassadors of the future, kids will be learning at AV about sustainable practices and implementing them in their family, their community and the world.
Our young people will learn the skills to connect with other sustainable minded people locally and globally and make meaningful changes to their environment.
